Breeding Program

The breeding of Mexipedium xerophyticum

Propagating Mexipedium xerophyticum from seed is considered difficult, and only a few specialized laboratories attempt to sow this Mexican orchid species. After a long and intensive search for a suitable growing medium—which involved numerous setbacks—we succeeded for the first time in 2025, in collaboration with growers from the United States, in producing high-quality seedlings. Because we hope that one day it will be possible to reintroduce this endangered species into its natural habitats, we have described our procedure in detail here.
